Longitudinal Health & Intellectual Disability Study (LHIDS)

Exploring the Effects of Healthy Choices for Individuals with Intellectual Disability

About the study:

There is a strong need to understand how certain health behaviors such as physical activity and nutrition relate to health outcomes in adults with intellectual disabilities. This study will help inform health care providers and caregivers about certain health issues that need to be addressed in persons with intellectual disabilities.

This research is being conducted by Drs. James Rimmer and Kelly (Kueifang) Hsieh at the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Aging with Developmental Disabilities at the University of Illinois at Chicago, in partnership with Special Olympics. The study will be conducted over the course of five years. This study will create important health knowledge for serving the unique needs of people with intellectual disabilities.

Who will be study participants?

Caregivers, family members or workers associated with an adult with an intellectual disability can take part in the study. The adult with an intellectual disability must be:

1. At least 18 years of age or older
2. Currently residing in the United States.

If you are an adult with an intellectual disability and would like to complete your own survey, please indicate this on the registration form.

What is the project about?

A survey asking a variety of questions related to the health of the adult with an intellectual disability will be mailed or available online.

The survey takes about 20-30 minutes to complete. Surveys will be conducted once per year for a period of five years. You will receive a $5 gift card for every survey you complete. There is no cost to participate in this study. If you choose to complete the paper version, prepaid return envelopes will be provided.
