You’re Invited!

You are invited to participate in a survey to better understand the health behaviors of adults with intellectual developmental disabilities (I/DD).

This research is being conducted by Drs. Kelly Hsieh and Sandra Magaña at the Rehabilitation Research Training Center on Developmental Disabilities and Health (RRTCDD) at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The study will be conducted over the course of five years. This study will create important health knowledge for serving the unique needs of people with I/DD.

Why is this study taking place?

There is a strong need to understand how certain health behaviors such as physical activity and nutrition relate to health outcomes in adults with I/DD. This study will help inform health care providers and caregivers about certain health issues that need to be addressed in persons with I/DD.

Do I qualify for the study?

Man and woman in carCaregivers, family members or workers associated with an adult with an I/DD can take part in the study. The adult with an I/DD must be:

1) At least 18 years of age or older
AND
2) Currently residing in the United States.

If you are an adult with an I/DD and would like to complete your own survey, please indicate this on the form.

What will happen if I participate?

If you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete a survey asking a variety of questions related to the health of the adult with an I/DD with whom you are associated (or yourself if you are completing your own survey). The survey can be filled out in a paper or an online method.

What do I do?

Man Choosing Food The survey includes questions about health-related quality of life, presence of chronic health conditions (e.g., diabetes, arthritis), participation in physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking, dietary habits, and oral hygiene.

The survey takes about 15-25 minutes to complete. Surveys will be conducted every two years (2014, 2016, and 2018). You will receive a $5 gift card for every survey you complete. There is no cost to participate in this study. If you choose to complete the paper version, prepaid return envelopes will be provided.
